Lead Document or Attachment?

Each document submitted for filing must be designated as either a Lead Document or an Attachment. You will be submitting an Envelope which will include all of the documents you intend to file in a particular case. All of the documents in your envelope will be Lead Documents unless they are exhibits or attachments to one of your documents. Using the example of filing a new case, the complaint, appearance, and summons are all Lead Documents.  If there are any exhibits to the complaint, those would be filed as attachments.

Attachments may also include subparts of large filings and unredacted documents containing confidential information. See the chart below.

 Lead Documents

Any documents to be filed with the Court, including but not limited to the following:

  • Appearance
  • Summons
  • Proof of Service
  • Pleadings

  • Notices of Hearing

Any of the above with confidential information redacted – should be designated as Public*

Exhibits to any Lead Document

Subsequent parts of any Lead Document that exceed 50 MB - Subsequent parts are filed as attachments to the Part 1 Lead Document **

Unredacted copies of Lead Documents containing confidential information are filed as attachments to the redacted Lead Document and designated as Confidential*

* Confidential Information:

Any document to be filed that contains confidential information should be redacted.  The redacted version is filed as a Public Lead Document.  A clean version should be filed as an attachment to the redacted Lead Document as a Confidential Attachment Document.  A Notice of Exclusion should also be filed as a Public Lead Document.  More detailed information about filings with confidential information coming soon.

** File Size

Documents are limited to a size of 50 MB.  If a document is too large, it should be divided into smaller parts.  Part 1 is filed as a Lead Document.  Subsequent parts should be sequentially numbered as Part 2, Part 3, etc. and filed as Attachments to the Part 1 Lead Document.
